Do I have to play Neverwinter Nights 1 to follow what happens in 2, and play 2 before Mask of the Betrayer? Or if it's not mandatory, would my experience be enhanced significantly if I were to play them all or at least 2? I have heard that the campaigns for NWN 1 and 2 are actually rather underwhelming, but I am willing to put up with it if it isn't too long.Ģ. I've heard of Neverwinter Nights but I don't really know anything about the games.ġ. But the one recommendation that sticks out to me is Mask of the Betrayer, it seems to have resonated a lot with people and I never really heard about it before in the conversation about great videogame stories. So naturally before making this thread I searched around here and elsewhere to see recommendations for something similar, and there was some obvious stuff like KOTOR2 (on my to-do list), Tides of Numenera (a lot of people seem lukewarm on it, not sure if/when I'll play it), Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity, etc. Other than that it was a very good narrative experience and very memorable. The clunky combat/gameplay was never an issue for me, the only time the gameplay actively made me annoyed was that first segment in the last dungeon because I had trouble dodging the Shadows and kept dying and having to rewatch the long cutscenes of your companions facing TTO over and over again. I loved the mournful, pensive tone offset by quirky humor, the themes about memory, identity, loss, morality, etc. It felt good to play an RPG that actually appealed to my tastes in terms of story, most JRPG's do not do it for me anymore in that department with only a handful of exceptions like NieR and its sequel.
